Cancer has a devastating effect on children.  It takes their hair, their courage, their confidence.

As a previous camper and now volunteer, ‘magic’ truly sums up Barretstown, such a special place.

Even the spark of childhood itself.  Barretstown uses a medically endorsed programme of ‘Therapeutic Recreation’ to give it all back.

Recently published results of research conducted by Yale University School of Medicine in 2012 shows that camps such as Barretstown contribute hugely to the emotional and psychological recovery of children who are or have been seriously ill.

  • 83% of parents saw an increase in their child’s confidence
  • 80% reported an increase in self-esteem
  • 76% reported an increase in maturity
  • 74% reported an increase in independence
  • 72% reported an increased interest in social activities

What it’s all about

While medical treatment very often produces great results, psychological and developmental issues remain to be dealt with.  We also work with parents and siblings to give them coping mechanisms and help them plan for the future.”

Dee Ahearn, CEO Barretstown.
