5km in Memory of Baby Matthew Fleming

Alison and Dave Fleming’s son Matthew was born with Edward’s syndrome, a rare and serious condition. Most babies born with Edward’s syndrome live for a very short time. Matthew survived for 86 minutes leaving Alison and Dave with overwhelming feelings of grief and despair and like life was never going to contain one more happy moment ever again.

After attending Bereavement Camp at Barretstown Dave and Alison realised that it was okay to laugh and to enjoy their other children and that it was ok to have fun again. They began to open up about their grief and realised they weren’t alone.

For the past two years the Flemings have organised a 5km Run & Family Walk in memory of Matthew. The event, in aid of Barretstown, has become an annual fixture and has to date raised almost €10,000. The Flemings say that the event encompasses everything that is important to them as a family – fun and remembrance. Each year so far the event has taken place on a beautiful sunny day.
