Colm’s story

I got my first experience of Barretstown while participating in a corporate social engagement outing with work. Over two days we all got the opportunity to get a real sense of the positive impact of Barretstown. At my workplace, we were delighted to be invited back that summer to be part of the Barretstown 20th Anniversary celebrations. We had great fun managing the bouncy castles, selling raffle tickets and helping out with pony rides. The following week, I got in contact with the staff at Barretstown and signed up as a Barretstown Ambassador.

I have participated in the Barretstown Magic Maker campaign at Christmas for two years now and I recently took part in an event for Barretstown at I Believe Christmas Markets with the Dublin Gospel Choir, it was so uplifting.

Through helping out at community events I have met so many inspirational people. This year I have had the pleasure to meet Brian Daly, who every year along with family and friends, organises the Ian Daly Swim a Mile event in memory of his son. In September, I attended the Liffey Odyssey Canoeing event organised by Conor Ryan. The canoe trip, in fancy dress, from the Garda Boat Club in the Phoenix Park to the 3 Arena in the Docklands was a great success and the enthusiasm of Conor and his team was totally infectious.

I am so glad to have got the opportunity to experience the magic of Barretstown and work with many truly inspiring staff and volunteers who deeply care about making a positive impact in lives of children with serious illness. I would always encourage others to get involved. You certainly won’t be disappointed!
